Value of Study Abroad
Studying abroad (or studying away on a domestic program elsewhere in the US or US territories) is a perfect complement to Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing ethos and allows students to expand both the scope of their studies and access a wider curriculum.
For your student, pursuing their field of study in another country can afford an opportunity to learn about different aspects of their field, gain hands-on experience strengthen language skills, and develop important interpersonal skills that will help them as they enter a global workforce.
Studying abroad also improves academic performance overall. A long-term study by the University of Georgia system (GLOSSARI), for example, revealed that study abroad students earned higher grades after returning from abroad and also graduated on time and at higher rates than non-study abroad peers.
Professionally, the academic experience and personal growth make study abroad students more competitive in any field. Employers know that students who have successfully studied abroad are self-motivated, adaptable, resilient, and willing to take on a challenge. Surveys of employers have shown that 25% indicated that international experience was a top priority for hiring, and over 40% said they would be willing to consider offering more money to candidates who studied abroad.
So, while cost is an important factor in choosing a study abroad program—or choosing to study abroad at all—it is an investment in the future. We courage you to explore the Financial Planning section of our website, which offers information on program costs, billing, financial aid and scholarships.
